Charles Wesley Richardson, 79, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014, at his home following complications from Merkel Cell and Squamous Cell skin cancers and Leukemia over the past four years. Services will be held at 10 am Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Bellmead Funeral Home with Officiant Honorable Larry McDonald of Gatesville and the Waco Police Department Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco with military honors. Visitation will be 5 to 7 pm, Monday, July 28, 2014 at Bellmead Funeral Home. Charlie was born at home on June 28, 1935, on Hogan Lane in, at that time, rural McLennan County, Texas, the only child of parents Archie Charles "AC" Richardson and Edna Mae Niswanger Richardson. He graduated from Axtell High School in 1954. He and his parents farmed and ran a Grade-A Dairy in Axtell. He was baptized as a youth in the stock tank at the Billington Baptist Church. He joined the U. S. Navy and served from 1955 - 1959 on the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier as an Ensign 3rd Class Electrician and as a Master-At-Arms (Navy policeman). Upon returning to Waco, he worked several years at General Tire and Rubber Co. then worked as an electrician for the City of Waco until he could join the next Waco Police Academy in 1963. He served as a Patrolman until 1969 when promoted to Patrol Sergeant, Police Records Division Sergeant and lastly City Jail Sergeant. He supervised many of "Waco's Finest" and retired after 26 and a half years with the Waco Police Department who nicknamed him "Sgt. Rich". In 1962 he married his first wife, Patricia Smith, with whom he had his only child, daughter, Renea Annette whom he lovingly called "Baby" and "Kid". On November 24, 1972, Charlie married his best friend and soul mate, Sue Wieting of Waco and they lovingly shared almost 42 years of marriage. Living in Axtell since their marriage, they raised cattle on their farm in addition to their both working full-time in their chosen professions in Waco. Charlie is remembered and honored by his family as a dedicated loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a master carpenter and built their Axtell home and many barns and loved nature and his cattle and "working the place" on his Ford tractor. He was an expert marksman and loved to hunt and fish since early childhood. He was a long-time former member of Axtell Baptist Church. He loved serving his Country and his fellow citizens through law enforcement with dedication and humor and will be missed greatly. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sue of Axtell; one daughter, Renea Richardson Alexander of Waco;one grandson, Andrew Ruiz Sr. and one granddaughter, Amber Burch. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Andrew "A J", Faith, Jayson and Zackery; and best four-legged friend, Sarah. Additionally, he is survived by family, Jesse and Kay Ruiz of West and his close friend, Ryan Smythe of Portland, OR, formerly of Axtell. Also surviving are Sue's twin sister, Linda Lou and husband, Larry McDonald of Gatesville, sister-in-law, Marcia Akal Wieting of Denver, Colorado and Wynona and Don Lipsett of Mexia as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Active pallbearers will be relatives. Honorary pallbearers are Ryan Smythe, Andrew Ruiz Sr. and all former and current Waco Police Department officers. Memorial contributions may be made to Waco's MCC Law Enforcement Academy scholarship program, Providence Hospice or a charity of one's choice. The family acknowledges and thanks Dr. Brad Holland, ENT Head & Neck Surgeon, Dr. Joseph Knipper, Doctors Carl Chakmakjian and Nathan Hilton of Texas Oncology and Dr. Staci Nix of Hillcrest Clinic in Bellmead, Guardian Home Healthcare and Providence Hospital and Providence Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care given to Charlie.
