Effie Lucille Roberts Harden . . . . . known by all as Lucille, was born in Otto, Texas on November 11, 1919 to Elliot and Frances Roberts. She had two sisters Ollie and Josie and two brothers Erwin and Herbert all predeceased her. She married Richard Cline Harden on July 31, 1937 in Groesbeck, Texas. They had four children, Frances, Alice, James and Nanci. They celebrated 60 years of marriage until his death in 1997. Lucille went home to her Lord on February 15, 2018 in Hospice care at St. Catherine's with her son James, daughter Nanci Arnett and Granddaughter Jennifer Fink by her side. Lucille was born in the aftermath of World War I that was soon followed by the Great Depression and World War II. She grew up in a rural area and like most people of that day she learned to make do with what she had, wasted nothing, used it up, and wore it out. There wasn't a welfare safety net and folks helped family and friends in need. Lucille said that as a young mother she lived in a home without running water. She did her share of canning produce from the garden and even picking cotton. These life experiences forged her into the strong, self reliant, and caring friend, wife, mother and grandmother that we all remember and loved. Life became easier in later years but Lucille never slowed down, always keeping busy. She enjoyed the outdoors, working in her yard and garden. Quilting, crocheting and other hand crafts were a big part of her life, every family member has a quilt or afghan she made. Lucille was active in the Rebekah Lodge, Volunteering at Heart of Texas Fair, and in later years she and R.C. traveled with the Good Sam's Club making more friends. She was a mother and a home maker and since R.C. worked in construction they moved around quite often. Each home was different but it soon was marked with her pictures, salt & pepper collection and all of those personal touches that made her house a home. Her home always seemed to have friends and family coming and going and filled with children and their toys. Lucille is survived by her son James Harden and wife Joanne, daughter Nanci Arnett, 13 Grandchildren, 35 Great Grand-children, and 11 Great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her daughters Alice Beasley and Frances Koon. Grandson Richard Koon, Great-granddaughter Keeley Bailey, son-in-law's Billy Arnett and Wayland Koon.
