Elizabeth Jane Smith, formerly of Waco, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2010, in Richmond, Virginia. A Mass and Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on January 16th in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elk, Texas with internment at the Church Cemetery to follow. Rosary will be 7 pm Friday Jan. 15 at Bellmead Funeral Home followed by a Viewing between 7:30 and 9:00. Jane was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on November 16, 1927 but as the daughter of a Colonel in the US Army, her family lived in several locations including New York City, Williamsburg, Virginia, and the Panama Canal Zone before moving to St. Joseph, Missouri where she graduated from high school in 1945. She then attended the University of Texas, graduating in 1949, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta social sorority. In 1952, she married Howard Smith of Marlin, Texas and shortly thereafter moved first to Houston and then to Waco to begin her teaching career and raise a family. She taught at various grade levels at Providence Heights Elementary School and Mountain View Elementary School. In 1985, she received the "Outstanding Teacher" award from the Waco Independent School District. After retiring from teaching, she and Howard took up permanent residence in the country near Mart, Texas. She remained active in the Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Sorority and the Kappa Alpha Theta Alumni Association, holding various offices in both. She was also an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Elk, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard, and is survived by her sons, Don and wife Holly of Richmond, Virginia, and Bob and wife Holliday, of Lopez Island, Washington., a brother Robert Washington of Houston, and sister Ann Beard of Fort Collins, Colorado plus a slew of nieces and nephews plus many other "adopted family" who she and Howard entertained, counseled, and talked with endlessly at the "Owl Ranch". Her smiles and glowing eyes will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Waco Alzheimer's Association, 6605 Sanger Avenue, Waco, Texas 76710.
