George Washington Varner III passed away on Thursday October 23, 2014 in Austin, TX. Graveside services will be 12:00 noon, Tuesday, October 28 at White Rock Cemetery near Elm Mott, TX. Born on May 27, 1927, in Waco, Texas, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend was a decorated veteran of WWII where he proudly served his nation in the U.S. Coast Guard. Before the war, George attended the Nalley School in Waco where he returned after the war and met and married his sweetheart Evelyn Uptmore in 1947. The Varners primarily raised their three children Greg, Nancy, and Kathy in Waco, TX. A longtime employee of General Motors, George retired in 1987 and was finally able to pursue his academic dream of earning a college degree in Theology from Southeastern Bible College. An avid reader, tinkerer, writer, and builder--George inspired those around him with his wood creations, poetry, and religious writings, and entertained with his kind-hearted wit, talent for whistling, and practical jokes on and off the golf course. He was an active member of the Waco Bible Chapel, North Richland Hills Bible Chapel, Garland Bible Chapel. and Austin Bible Chapel. George was preceded in death by his son Greg, his parents, his sister Ruth, his brother Earl, brother Albert, and brother Alec. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Evelyn, his daughters and sons-in-law Nancy and Gary Eubanks and Kathy and Louis DeLaunay, eight grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren. "Pappaw" was a true "bel espirit" who made everyone around him feel special with his gentle laughter and easy smile. We will never know anyone quite like him, and for that we know we were so blessed to share this earth with him. In lieu of flowers, any kind donations can be made in George's name to Sandy Creek Bible Camp at 5051 Prayer LN. Washington, TX. 77880.
