Hortense Turner, 85, of Waco passed away December 17, 2008 at a local nursing home. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 23 at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 22 at the funeral home. Viewing will begin Sunday December 21 at 8:30 am. Mrs. Turner was born March 14, 1923 in Dallas, TX to Pearce and Vera Lee (Mack) Scott. She graduated from A.J. Moore High School and Prairie View A&M University. She was a school teacher for 43 years serving the Waco ISD at North 7th St., J.H. Hines, Oakwood, Bell's Hill and Kendrick Elementary Schools. In 1996 she earned the Residence of the Month Award, in 2004 she received the Contributions to the City Award and in 2005 she received the Woman of The Year Award all from the city of Bellmead. Mrs. Turner was a retired lifetime member of the National Education Association, a lifetime member of the Texas State Teachers association and an honorary lifetime member of the Texas PTA. Survivors include her son Charles Bendy and Gwendolyn of Rowlett, TX, many cousins and friends. Pallbearers will be members of Bellmead Fire Department.
