Iris A. McKinney, 97, of Waco, passed away Thursday, September 20, in Waco. Graveside services will be 10 am Monday, Sept. 24 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Frank Wallace officiating. A private memorial services will be 3 pm Monday, Sept. 24 for the residents of Stilwell Retirement Residence. Iris was born February 4, 1915 in Johnson County, Texas to Charles and Sarah (Crutcher) Austin. She attended rural schools and then graduated from North Texas College. She earned her Master's degree in education in 1956 from McMurry College and taught primary education for 40 years. Iris married Sidney McKinney in 1942 while he was stationed in Italy, during WWII. After his discharge from the Army Air Corps they moved to Abilene where they raised their sons. Upon Sidney's retirement they moved to Salado where Iris was able to enjoy china painting, quilting, sewing and crafts of many kinds. Iris and Sidney moved to Waco in 2001 to be closer to family and Sidney passed away in 2002. She remained a resident of Stilwell Retirement Residence where she had many friends and fond memories. She was an avid football fan and loved listening to her books on tape. Iris was a devout Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church of Salado. Iris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years; 3 sisters; and 2 brothers. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Don McKinney and wife, Jean and Mac McKinney and wife, Anna. Survivors also include her grandchildren, Matthew McKinney and wife Melissa, Aimee Fowell and husband Russ, Sydney Hampton and husband Hunter; 3 great grandchildren and many loved nieces, nephews and family members. A special thank you goes to the ER staff of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center for their compassionate and spiritual care given to Iris and her family.
