Born March 4, 1942, in Alvin, Texas, Joan Carol Bates was a beacon of love, care, and nurturing to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Joan was the beloved daughter of Sam and Ella Williams, and the cherished sister of Edwin and Mickey Williams, all of whom preceded her in death.
Joan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who touched the lives of many with her kindness and generosity. On July 6, 1968, she married the love of her life, William Eldon Bates Sr. Their bond was a testament to enduring love and companionship. Together, they raised one son, Brandon Eldon Bates, who, along with his wife Sallie, resides in Waco, Texas.
Her family also included three stepchildren, whom she loved dearly: Rita Eakin and her husband Sean of Dandridge, Tennessee; William Eldon Bates Jr. of China Spring, Texas; and Cassie Crisp of Palestine, Texas. Joan's love extended to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, bringing joy and warmth to their lives.
Joan had a profound passion for plants, flowers, and antiques. Her home was a sanctuary of beauty and history, filled with unique antiquities collected during travels across Texas and neighboring states with her husband. She had an incredible green thumb and a deep appreciation for the natural world, cultivating vibrant gardens that were a source of joy and serenity.
For 46 years, Joan dedicated herself to her profession as a hairdresser, where her talent and warm personality left a lasting impact on her clients. She was known for her artistic touch and the genuine care she put into her work, making everyone feel special and beautiful.
A devout and faithful Christian, Joan's life was a testament to her unwavering faith. She was an active and cherished member of the New Road Church of Christ in Waco, where she shared her beautiful singing voice with the congregation. Her love for music and worship was a source of inspiration to all who heard her sing.
Joan was the epitome of strength and resilience, facing life's challenges with grace and determination. She was the toughest woman her family had ever known, and her spirit was a guiding light for them. Her loving nature, combined with her formidable strength, made her a truly remarkable person.
She is survived by her beloved husband, William Eldon Bates Sr.; her son Brandon and daughter-in-law Sallie; her stepchildren Rita, William Jr., and Cassie; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joan's legacy of love, kindness, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She was a beautiful, beautiful soul who will be missed beyond measure.
A graveside service for immediate family will be held tomorrow, July 10, 2024, at 11:00 am at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New Road Church of Christ in her memory. Joan's family extends beyond immediate relatives, encompassing all those she touched with her love, kindness, and unwavering faith. Her life was a blessing, her memory will be a treasure forever, and her legacy lives on in each of their hearts
