Martha Jo Harper, 90, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, May 28 at a local nursing home. Graveside services will be 1 pm Friday, May 30 at Oakwood Cemetery with long time family friend, Robert Hawkins officiating. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:00 pm Thursday, May 29 at Bellmead Funeral Home. Martha Jo was born March 21, 1924 in Temple, Texas the only child of Cecil and Ethel (Hooker) Harper. She worked as a relief telegrapher for Western Union in her younger years then went to work for Southwestern Bell which became AT&T and worked as a clerk until retiring after 30 years. She was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers, was a delegate of the Central Texas Labor Council since 1995 and a member of CWA local 6225 in Waco. She was also a member of the Central Texas Democratic Women, the McLennan County Democratic Party and was past president of the Central Texas Kennel Club. Martha Jo was preceded in death by her parents; and long time companion of 30 years, Ruth Boggan. Survivors include her life- long friends and caregivers, Nolene Sykora and Karen Riel both of Waco; and numerous other close friends. Special thanks to Scott & White Hospice for their excellent care.
