Rufus Jackson Lewis left us on November 4, 2024, at the age of 72, but not without leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure to know him. Born on May 14, 1952, in Fort Hood, Texas, Rufus grew up in the small, charming town of McGregor. Attending school there planted the seeds of his hands-on approach to life, which later led him into the trade of welding-an art form he mastered and made a career of at Wells Cargo until he decided to retire.
Known for his fierce independence, Rufus carved out a life that mirrored his love for the great outdoors. Whether he was casting a fishing line into a shimmering lake or out hunting in the woods, nature was his sanctuary-a simple pleasure that grounded him profoundly. Rufus didn't just know how to weld metal; he melted hearts with his quick wit and contagious laughter that always offered a comforting presence no matter where you found yourself.
Rufus had a notorious sweet tooth, often sneaking candy even when others were looking. He'd chuckle it off, showing the twinkle in his eye that always betrayed any attempt at seriousness. Although moderately religious, Rufus carried with him a quiet reverence for Christian teachings that flowed through his actions more than his words.
Per his wishes for simplicity even in passing, his family has chosen not to hold a public service. Rufus believed that life's celebrations were to be enjoyed while we're still around for them. So, in lieu of gathering but in memory of his wisdom, perhaps we should remember one of the many lessons Rufus exemplified: "When you know better, do better." Here's to a man who consistently tried to do just that, living life by his own rules and making each day count in his special way.
