Shirley Jean Adams, 80, of Lorena, TX, died peacefully at home Friday, November 13, 2009. A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday Nov. 18 at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel. The celebration will continue with services in Rapid City and Spearfish Canyon, SD at a later date. Shirley was born September 30, 1929, in Deadwood, SD to Claire Elizabeth (Dearinger) and Walter Ray Hall Sr. When she was a child, the family moved to Rapid City, SD. She began taking piano lessons at the age of 4 becoming a trained Classical Pianist and instilling in all of her children a love for Classical music. Shirley graduated from Rapid City High School where she was a drum majorette and involved in many activities and clubs. She was an avid horsewoman and earned the nickname "Dudy" as a young girl. She attended college in Vermillion, SD returning home before finishing her studies to marry high school sweetheart, C.G. "Bud" Smith September 22, 1948. She managed the House of Pizza for several years, with many young employees who loved her. Shirley's home was always a popular gathering place for her friends, her children and her children's friends. Many young folks considered her their second "Mom". She was beloved by most, a confidante to many and accepting of all. Bud and Shirley moved to Texas in 1967. For many years, Shirley worked as receptionist and assistant to photographer Jimmie Willis. Through this role, Shirley met and enjoyed working with many Wacoans over the years, including attending and photographing many local high school graduations and proms. Shirley married W. Frank Adams in 1985, with whom she enjoyed cooking, entertaining and going to "garage sales". Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her 2nd husband, Frank Adams and one infant great-grandson, Waylon Michael Wendelboe. Shirley leaves to treasure her memory: first husband Bud Smith of McGregor, TX, daughters Pam and husband Roger Evans, Vicky and husband Gil Gray, Sandee and husband Dave Mack, all of Rapid City, SD; son Ernie Smith and wife Barbara of Eddy, TX and daughter Cindy and husband Randy Passmore of Lorena, TX; sisters Lois Cruse of Rapid City and Dian Goldberg of Denver, CO; brothers Pat Hall and wife Vicky, Mike Hall and wife Alice, and Bill Hall, all of Rapid City and Walt Hall Jr. and wife Joanne of Keystone, SD and Seattle, WA; 12 grand-children and 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and 4-legged constant companion, Lil'. Special thanks to Sheila Woods of Providence Hospice who helped make the last 2 weeks of Shirley's life as comfortable as possible.
