Vera Swaner Mathis, 91, long time Axtell resident, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the Senior Care Nursing Center of Hewitt. Graveside services will be 10:30 am Saturday, Nov. 12 at Axtell Cemetery with Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 pm Friday, Nov. 11 at Bellmead Funeral Home. Vera was born July 9, 1920 in Mt. Calm, Texas to Allen Robert and Mattie Pearl (Selby) Swaner. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved her family and friends and her heritage. Vera enjoyed gardening, cooking, big dinners with family and friends and making homemade salsa and pickles, she also loved making homemade things and giving them to family and friends. Vera would also give you a piece of her mind, whether you wanted it or not. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband Johnny B. Mathis; her parents; 15 brothers and sisters; 2 daughters Gayle Bankston and Joyce Trlica; and daughter-in-law Connie Mathis. Survivors include her sons Johnny Mathis of Milford and Kent Mathis and wife Roberta of Axtell; 10 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express a special thank you to all the staff at Senior Care Nursing Center of Hewitt and Providence Hospice for their care and support, and a very special thanks to Luna Parker for her love and friendship.
