Vernon Matthew Davis
March 18, 1936 – February 18, 2025
Vernon was born in Waco, Texas on March 18, 1936 to Deckard Mathew Davis and Cleta LaJuana (McFalls) Davis. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 18, 2025. Visitation will be held Friday, February 28, 2025 from 6-8:00 pm at Bellmead Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be 1:00 pm Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Oak Lawn Baptist Church in Waco with Rev. Terry Wilkerson officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.
Vernon became a Christian at age 10 and was a long-time member of Oak Lawn Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and many other roles over many years. He also served in the Army National Guard from 1954-1966. He worked in construction most of his adult life, beginning in 1954 to 1966, then at American Oil Company in Texas City for 9 and half years, General Tire in Waco for 12 and a half years, as a full time knife maker for two years, and then back to construction for the next 28 years. He was a master builder, having built four of his own homes in his spare time. He was also a very skillful maker of custom knives, was a member of the Knifemaker Guild from 1998 to 2005 and was featured in Knife World magazine.
Vernon lived his faith every day, not only through his words, but more through his deeds. He was a devoted family man and a friend to all who knew him, always ready to lend a helping hand. His life was truly a living testimony of his faith and love of God. He loved Southern Gospel music and attended many Gospel music concerts. He was himself a fine musician often playing his guitar and singing in church. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and LaJuana Davis; stepmother, Ruth Elizabeth (Derr) Davis; brothers, William Charles Davis, Daniel Frank Davis, and Dennis Michael Davis; sisters, Beverly Ann Duckett and Mary Elizabeth Ray; grandson, Dustin Thomas Davis, and granddaughter, April Roxanne McClintok.
Those who survive him include his wife, Linda (Mai) Davis; son, Vernon Matthew Davis Jr. and his wife Annette; stepson, Richard Eric Case; daughters, Cheryl Danette Galvez and her husband Paul, Cathy Ann Gibson, and Margaret Ruth Andrews; grandsons, Johnny Kirk McClintok Jr., Jesse Waylon McClintok, Sam Kyle Coward, Jimmy Doyle Coward Jr., Devin Wade Davis, and Victor Shannon Davis; granddaughters, Jennifer Karen May, Lindsay Allison Whitt, Patience Nicole Kutkoski, and Sandra Paige Davis, plus many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Vernon was dearly loved and will be forever greatly missed. HE WAS OUR HERO!!
