After a brief, but valiant, battle with cancer, Vernon Rodger Smith, 80, of Hallsburg, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 14, 2025. Visitation will be from 6-8pm on Friday, January 17, 2025 at Bellmead Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10am on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Bellmead Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Robinson Cemetery. Rodger, AKA ‘Drugstore Cowboy’, was born on December 28, 1944 in Riesel, Texas to Vernon and Willie Mae (Honey) Smith. As a truck driver for about 65 years, he loved to talk, tell stories, and never met a stranger who stayed a stranger for very long. He was well known and loved by many people across the country. He enjoyed going to the dirt track races and was also an avid flea market salesman. He highly enjoyed visiting with the scores of people he knew and made friends with there over the years. Rodger is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carolyn (Ammons) of Hallsburg, daughter Sheila Calvery and husband, James of Gatesville, son Kevin Smith and wife, Melissa of West; grandchildren Jamie, Jesse, Chasin, Katelyn, Sadie and husband Sean, Trent, and great grandson Adrian. He is also survived by a sister, Wanda Newsom of Taylor, brothers Jimmie Smith of Floresville, Elmer Smith and wife Cindy of Hallsburg, Alfred Smith and wife Linda of Waco, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Selena Christine, and brother Morris Smith Pallbearers will be Chasin Smith, James Calvery, J. D. Feltgen, Justin Michum, Shane Northcutt and Jimmy Foster. The family is extremely grateful for the excellent care and support from the wonderful staff at Waco Gastroenterology, Texas Oncology, Providence Hospital and Providence Hospice.
