USAF Senior Master Sergeant Ret. Walter Murchison, 89 of Waco passed away Friday, Aug. 14 surrounded by his family at his home. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17 at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron Oden officiating. Burial will be at Rosemound Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16 at the funeral home. Walter was born July 22, 1920 at home in Madison County, Tennessee to Elam Truman and Madgie Bell (Snider) Murchison. He married Lucille Ellison in 1951. Walter enlisted in the Tennessee National Guard 40th Division in 1940 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater of Operations. He was in the 78th Lightning Division and entered Europe through Belguim and into Germany. He spent the winter of 1944 in Hurtgen Forest. He served in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle for Hurtgen Forest and received the Bronze Star for serving as a combat medic. He was discharged from the Army in October of 1945 and returned to the family farm. From 1947 to 1970 he served in the Air Force going to Germany, Australia, Taiwan, the Adak Islands, Alaska and other bases in the Continental United States. He received a Bachelor of Science degree at A.T.U. in Killeen, TX., taught at Texas State Technical College and was coordinator of Veterans Affair at McLennan Community College. He was a member of Lakeview United Methodist Church, Sul Ross Dance Club and Bellmead Masonic Lodge # 1329. He was an avid golfer and played for many years at James Connally Municipal Golf Course and volunteered at the L.U.M.C. thrift store. He loved to read and was a very caring person who touched many lives with his kindness He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lucille of 30 years and 9 siblings, Odessa, Troy, James, Bessie, Wilson, Will Ross, Johnny, Maxine, and Ima Jean. Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Laura Mae Murchison, one sister, Lillian Sisson, three children, Elizabeth Farley of Bellmead, Steve Murchison and wife Kristi of Arlington, Sam Murchison and wife Karen of Little Elm, TX. two step-daughters, Christy
Hopkins and Laura Lynn Skala and husband Ronnie, five grandchildren, Colin Luttoschka, Ashley Farley, Andrew Farley, Steven Murchison and Spencer Murchison, two great grandchildren, Gavin and Autumn Luttoschka, three step grandchildren, Michael Sanchez, Lauren Sanchez and Stephen Skala, numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be the Air Force Honor Guards. Memorials may be made to Lakeview United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society. The family would like to thank the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System and Providence Hospice.
