Wayne David Haas, 68, formerly of Bellmead, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 22, 2015. Wayne attended LaVega Elementary and Junior High, and Richfield High School in Waco. Wayne was a Viet Nam combat veteran (Army 1967-1969) and was promoted to Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, Mortar Platoon. His unit was nicknamed "First Lightning." After being wounded during his first Viet Nam tour of duty for which he received his first Purple Heart, Wayne re-enlisted and was again wounded in battle and was awarded a second Purple Heart. He earned numerous medals, including two Bronze Stars. After serving his country, Wayne held supervisory positions at Air Exchange in Houston and Spenco Medical in Waco. Wayne was an avid deer hunter and had a passion for hot rod cars. He was known for his drag racing skills, some of which were legal. Wayne was a member of Grace Temple Baptist church in Waco for as long as his health permitted. For the past several years Wayne resided at Regency Manor, a VA supported nursing home, in Temple, Texas. Cause of death was congestive heart failure and nervous system damage resulting from exposure to Agent Orange, and PTSD. Surviving are Wayne's son, Jeffrey Wayne Haas of Bellmead; daughter Kelly Haas Schmitz and her husband Leon Schmitz of Bellmead; granddaughters Haley Haas and Breanna Schmitz of West, Texas; brother Leslie Allen Haas and sister-in-law Sherry Haas of Salado; brother Thomas Kelton Haas and his wife Cathy Haas of Atlanta, GA; and brother Steven Lynn Haas and his wife, Sue, of Goldthwaite, Texas. Wayne was preceded in death by his father and mother, Leslie Allen Haas, Sr., and Geneva Waldrop Haas; and by his beloved stepfather, Wallace Dickson. Memorial services will be held at Bellmead Funeral Home on Thursday, June 25th at 10:00 am, followed by burial at Rosemound Cemetery in Waco.
