Wilburn Edward Kirkland, 80, of Bellmead passed away Friday, October 18 in Glen Rose, Texas. Services will be 11 am Monday, October 21 at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Wilkerson officiating. Burial will be at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 5:00 to 6:30 pm Sunday, October 20 at the funeral home. Wilburn was born March 28, 1933 in Sudan, Texas to Wilson and Edna (Toten) Kirkland. He graduated from LaVega High School in 1951 where he played football, basketball and ran track. Wilburn served in the Military in Seoul Korea from 1953-55 and married Betty Moses in March 1955. He served on the LaVega ISD school board for eleven years at which time the new LaVega High School was built. He was a Division Representative at General Tire & Rubber Co. until retiring after 31 years of service and worked as Maintenance Director at LaVega ISD for 10 years. Wilburn loved traveling, hunting, playing golf with his sons-in-law and grandchildren and enjoyed playing dominoes and cards with family and friends. He and Betty are members of Oak Lawn Baptist Church. Wilburn was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Elsie Kirkland McCamey. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Moses Kirkland of Bellmead; brother, Glynn Kirkland and wife, Reta of Whitney; brother-in-law, Jerry McCamey; daughters, Carol Kirkland Cathey and husband, Billy of Granbury; Karen Kirkland Corley and husband, David of Andrews and Sharon Kirkland Simon and husband, Dennis of Denton; grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kelsi Cathey, Kirk and Kade Corley and Tanner, Tyler and Travis Simon; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Oak Lawn Baptist Church.
